What defines Soft Autumn

Soft Autumn is defined by chroma before anything else: it is a muted season, meaning saturated, clear colours overwhelm it while softened, dusty versions of the same hues look natural. The undertone is warm but only mildly so, which puts Soft Autumn on the border with Soft Summer, its cool sister. Depth is medium, with features that blend into each other rather than contrasting sharply.

That combination produces a palette of warm, muted, mid-depth colours: terracotta rather than orange, olive rather than lime, dusty rose rather than pink, mushroom and taupe rather than white and black. The Soft Autumn palette leans harder on neutrals than any other Autumn, and its neutrals are unusually wearable as main colours. Soft Autumn colours to avoid

Two things fight Soft Autumn colouring: high saturation and coldness. Neon orange, electric blue and true fuchsia are so loud that your features recede behind them. Icy pastels and cool greys pull the warmth from your skin. Stark white and jet black are the most common wardrobe defaults and both are wrong for you: white is too crisp and black is too heavy.
