What defines Warm Autumn

Warm Autumn sits in the centre of the Autumn family. Its defining trait is temperature: the undertone is unmistakably warm, so much so that cool colours look almost wrong rather than merely less good. Depth is medium, which means neither the lightest nor the darkest version of a colour is the best one; the middle, fully saturated version usually is. Chroma is medium to rich, so colours can be fairly strong as long as they carry that toasted, sun-warmed quality.

Compared with its neighbours, Warm Autumn is brighter and lighter than Deep Autumn and clearer and warmer than Soft Autumn. It shares its warmth with its sister season Warm Spring, but Spring colours are clear and fresh while Autumn colours are muted and earthy: a Spring green is apple, an Autumn green is olive. Warm Autumn colours to avoid

Anything cool, icy or electric works against you. Hot pink, fuchsia, royal blue and cool purples pull the warmth out of your skin and leave it looking sallow. Pale, powdery pastels are too light and too cold to hold their own against your colouring. Pure black and stark white are the most common mistakes: neither is in your palette, and both create a harsh, cold edge near the face.
